Marvel Releases Trailer #2 For Black Widow

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are getting another peek at the upcoming film Black Widow, set to release in May. Now that the credits can officially say that two Academy Award-nominated actresses (Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh) are headlining the movie, the Oscar love will just add to the already huge audience base.

The franchise just dropped a second trailer for the highly-anticipated superhero flick, giving fans a taste of what’s in store for their ride with Natasha Romanoff.

And the nominees are …

The morning started off on a great note for Johansson and Pugh on January 13, even before the film’s special footage came out. With Johansson getting two Oscar nominations – Best Actress for Marriage Story and Best Supporting Actress for JoJo Rabbit, the Marvel actress is likely to go home with the gold.

Though Johansson lost out on winning a Golden Globe to RenĂ©e Zellweger for Judy, getting two nods from the Academy is a high honor in itself. The last time an actress received a double nomination was in 2007 for Cate Blanchett for her roles in I’m Not There and Elizabeth: The Golden Age, according to CBS News.

Pugh reportedly was woken by a call from her agent to give her the good news of her Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role as Amy in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women. “Before the moment.. the exact moment #nominated #foraf***kingoscar!!!!!!,” Pugh wrote on Instagram in before-and-after pics, according to E! News.

A harsh Taskmaster

The highly-anticipated new footage of Black Widow was dropped during the National Championship game between the Clemson Tigers and the LSU Tigers. In the trailer, fans get a close-up look at the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe villain, Taskmaster. CinemaBlend reports that this bad guy possesses photographic reflexes, meaning he can instantly mimic any maneuver he witnesses, both in person or on video. The unique talent makes Taskmaster a formidable foe for Black Widow.

According to The Verge,  most of the footage in the new trailer was first seen at D23, Disney’s biennial fan convention. Black Widow takes place out of chronological order with Marvel’s other films, set before Endgame, and in between the time periods of 2016’s Captain America: Civil War and 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War.

Cast of characters

Opening with Romanoff running from international authorities after her betrayal off the Sokovia Accords, the film brings together characters from her past. Pugh plays Yelena Belova, who is referred to as Romanoff’s sister in the trailer. The heroine brings Red Guardian, played by David Harbour, on her team along with Melina Vostokoff, (Rachel Weisz) a former Russian agent. CNET reports that Robert Downey, Jr. is rumored to make a cameo as Tony Stark’s Iron Man. The film is directed by Cate Shortland.

In December, Pugh shared her excitement at being a part of the female-led project. “I loved the script, and I love Cate Shortland,” Pugh said, according to CinemaBlend. “And I think everything that they’re trying to do with that film is make it as painful and as real and as gritty as possible and it was exactly like that when we made it. And that was a really nice thing to get to, and of course I got to be with the Black Widow and watch her work, which was pretty amazing considering she’s been the only female superhero for the past 10 years.”

Marvel fans have to wait only a few months more – Black Widow opens on May 1.
